Fire Butterfly Jewels and a Giveaway

Wanted to leave a quick note about another giveaway I have going on. This one is for one of my letters. It's on Fire Butterfly Jewels where all of it will be nicely taken care of for me, so I'll just quickly retire and get back to my painting... the procrastination will kill me one day...

Almost forgot, the apocalypse... I think pastafarians are starting to loose, because it was way too hot today. and yes, I actually had to water my plants today since the rain never came. It's so humid out, I really wish we had some rain, but alas, Yahweh decided I should suffer for my sins and bake alive. Must be because I worship animal idols.

Crazy Video Day and Nothing to Post

Today was supposed to be my youtube day. I was supposed to work on my first video, get it ready, post it and enjoy. Well... first I found out my microphone isn't doing too good, so I had to run around the mall in search of a new one. Found it. Works just a little bit better, but I figured it's good enough.
Sat down trying to figure out what I have to say. Wrote it all down, practiced. Spent a few hours trying to record, rerecord, rererecord a 5 minute video. And I thought I'd have some time left over to read blogs. It's almost 3 in the morning now and I just finished with the recording part. Will have to edit it and post probably tomorrow. If that's the case, my giveaway for the Joy painting will be posted tomorrow as well.

For those who are wondering, there was a spider on that tree, that's why I have this funny face. Spiders love my, I don't love them back... They love biting me way too much...

Oh and I had something super good happen today. I did a feature on this awesome artist, Jessica Lopez a few days ago on my other blog. Well, she sent me one of her prints and it's beautiful. It looks really good up close, you can really appreciate all the inking she did on it. You can't really see it on the photo on line, but when you see the print itself, the inking is beautiful. She also gave me a coupon to use and to share. It's good for 2 purchases, so if anyone wants it, it's AVBLOG. I was going all out promoting her on every networked I knew today. I think I tweeted about it 3 times. Jessica is so talented, and her work is so good. Oh, I'm too exited, I have to wrap this up before I go too far with this.

Apocalypse Update: Nothing new, same hot weather all day, same rain at night. Oh and Monkey tried to commit suicide yet again. I went into the other room for a few minutes and all I heard was some woman saying "don't jump, don't jump kitty." He actually wasn't going to jump, he is just living on the edge and loves walking on it too. Crazy little Monkey. If he would've fallen though and I couldn't find him (I don't think he'd die after falling from the second floor) it just might've been a mini end of the world for me.

Life of a Workaholic

I am somewhat of a workaholic. Not that I enjoy working all that much, but it's the stubbornness in me speaking I think. I have this drive to succeed no matter the obstacles, no matter how much time and effort it will take. Because of it I end up working for 12 hours a day every day. My husband is blaming it on my nursing school habits when I had to stay up all night to finish yet another process record (we had to do one every week), to study for yet another test, to pass yet another skill. I don't know, he might be right, but I think I'm just really stubborn. I have been told too many times that I can't have my art as a full time job, that all artists are starving, that I have to get a 9-5, that I will not make it as self employed. Every time I hear that I end up getting more and more stubborn and working harder and harder to prove them all wrong. So far it's been working. It's a slow process, but it's worth every minute I invested in it.

It's hard to remember to stop and enjoy the moment with my kind of stubbornness, but this is what I have my husband for. He "forgets" to wake me up when I ask him to, he arranges pizza and movies from the 60s nights (we have a couple of those a week) and he reminds me that every now and again I should do something like laundry.

My cats remind me to stop every now and again and feed them, hug then, play with them. If I don't get the message, I get the claws.

I believe this drive of mine is a key to success and the reminders to stop and smell the litter box are there to keep my sanity.

What do you think? Is being a workaholic needed to success in small business? Is it a way to loose one's mind? Is that litter box ever going to learn how to clean itself?

Apocalypse update: It's been a week since this most recent end of the world began. Nothing special today, sunny day with a little bit of rain, I was even able to take some good pictures of my paintings while it was sunny. Doesn't really look like anything changed since the 21st. Monkey is still hunting my feet, Cuteness is still sleeping next to me when I'm on the computer and I'm still writing on this blog. Even my dangerously unsteady balcony hasn't fallen yet.

How to Decorate a Frame with Magazine Pages

Today I was doing everything BUT what I was supposed to do. Today is the day I'm supposed to read blogs, haven't even started yet. What I did do though is talk to other bloggers and arranging a giveaway for one of my paintings. It should be up and running in a week or so. I also got offered to be a guest blogger and do a tutorial. Now I can't even find a link because my mind is slowly melting. I'll post it as soon as I will find it though. Oh yes, and I'm also a regular guest blogger for The Art Inquirer, I'll be writing for it once a week or so. Anyway, with doing all that, 8 hours went by and I have only read one blog so far. On a brighter side, I now have a step by step tutorial for my frames. So, here it is:

Take a frame that has flat front (or top if it's laying on the table).

Take some magazines, cut pages of magazines into strips that would fit well on the frame.

Roll strips of paper into little rolls

Glue rolls onto the frame (I used Mod Podge for it, cover them with Mod Podge to make sure they are glued togather and have shiny look as well as protected from some of that damage.

Frame whatever you wish in them.

This is a simplified version of the tutorial. I'll post a link to the full tutorial as soon as it'll be posted and as soon as I'll find the address of that blog again. I'm too disorganized today...

Oh, almost forgot, the end of the world update... It was nice and sunny all day, then it suddenly got dark and started raining (well it looked more like someone was hosing the windows, less then a minute after it started pouring rain, it also started hailing, large chunks of frozen slush. It didn't damage any of my plants though, so I'm happy. This is not that uncommon here in Erie, I mean, it is Erie after all. It's not even that uncommon in the rest of the world. When I lived in Kyrgyzstan for example, we had hail every spring, not long after all the fruit trees would bloom. Trees got used to this and ended up blooming twice every spring. Nonetheless,  I'll go ahead and say that pastafarians are doing a great job and managed to counteract this Yahveh sent disaster in less then 30 minutes. In less than half an hour the sun came back out and everything looked beautiful again. It's been raining on and off though, but that's to be expected from such epic battle between Yahveh and Flying Spaghetti Monster's chosen people.

Update: I did it!!! I found the blog where my tutorial will be posted... it's My Hobby Shop. The frame decorating tutorial is up and running

Good vs Evil, Abstract Drawing

Good vs Evil, or whatever I'm going to name this abstract drawing when it will be done is underway. It's work in progress. I'm actually just penciling it in so far. It's a really large project, actually made of 8 pieces. It's made of 5 11x7 and 3 8.5x11 pieces. The whole thing will be inked. It's will take me forever, so don't expect the end result any time soon. This is the first time I'm doing something this large and inking it to boot. What was I thinking when I started it? Oh yes, I remember, I was thinking how cool it would look.

I was inspired to do this by a few Jehovah  Witnesses I talked to, who seem to think you can have good without evil. I disagree with them on this. On this drawing I will have red and black part (represents evil) and gold (good) fusing into one another. Because in life, this is exactly how it is. Good feeds the evil and evil feeds the good. Something I see as good might be seen as evil by others. Hunter sees hunting as a way to find food, which is good. Hunted sees it as it's own doom, evil. Evil in this world forces people to do good. Deforestation (evil) is being fought against and forests are being protected and replanted (good). Animal being abused (evil) ends up being rescued (good) and so on.
I can't think of any good that can exist without it's evil counterpart. Birth without death would lead to overpopulation and further deforestation in order to provide more houses for all the people for example.

Is there anything you can think of where good can exist without the evil?

Oh, and a quick update, pastafarians are acting up, I guess it's hard to regulate weather properly when you have Yahweh against you. It was really hot all day today, humid and all. At night it rained. I wonder who will win, Jahweh or pastafarians in this epic battle for earth survival. I place my bet on pastafarians, I think they can stop the end of the world. They were rather successful these first 4 days.

Ornate Letter Frenzy

I have been posting the rest of the letters on etsy yesterday and today, there is a lot more to go, but I figured I'd mention it here. I'm planning to sponsor a giveaway on a different site, and the gift will be one of these letters.

A strange thing, I slept for only 4 or 5 hours and don't even feel it. I have to stop staying up till sunrise.

Now on the brighter side, it hailed last night, those darn pastafarians must've overdone it... However it's nice and sunny today. It's OK though, we have the whole 6 month before the end of the world ends.  What kind of sicko said that the end of the world, the total destruction of everything we worked so hard to achieve is a good news anyway? Now that's the kind of people you don't want to have an atomic bomb.

Ancestors Spirits, Small Watercolor Painting

I just remembered about this set of small watercolor painting I did last year. I hang them on the wall and forgot all about them. This is from my Ancestor's collection. I have vases, pencil cups, sketch cards, pins, this set plus two larger acrylic paintings all from this collection. Erie Horror fest is responsible for this collection. I was one of the vendors last year for the independent horror movie festival and since I don't really have any horror art, I wanted to have something that would be somewhat horror, but retain my style. I ended up using simplified version of my abstract lines with faces. As a result I got cool ghostly, creepy faces while using more or less the same style. I had a problem finding frames for these, the sizer and shape it too different from what most people work with. My answer to the problem was to make some myself. It's actually not so much a frame as a cool looking back that can be used to hang them on the wall. What I did was basically braided strips of paper from magazines and newspapers into a shape I wanted, and glued the painting onto it. I then covered the surface with a shiny, protective layer of sealant and called it a day. The problem I ended up having though is the price. Because of the braided paper I ended up spending way more time on it and it spiked up the price. Not many people are willing to pay a lot of money for such a small painting. After they weren't sold at the first show, I hang them on the wall to keep them safe and sound and was actually somewhat happy they didn't sell. They look great together, create a larger piece that way. Because I made some of then hang sideways, they look much better when they are all next to each other in a shape they are in on this photo. All good things must come to an end though, I don't like having the same looking walls year after year, I want a change. So, here is what I was planing to do. I'll post them on etsy and if they sell, great. If not... I don't know... I might donate it for some good cause or give them away, or just give them as gifts to my family and friends.

Oh and a quick update, world is standing,  weather is rainy and we got lightning and all, but it's nothing unusual. A few weeks ago we had a roof fly of off a building next to ours, and that was before the end of the world began. From what I hear nothing really changed in the world, just the same old polluted Earth. It's OK though, we have platy of time, the end of the world is supposed to end in 2012 after all. Can't wait to see what happens...

We are all Going to Die, WOOHOO

Oh, what an awesome news, the end of the world has begun. Yeah, that's right, it begun yesterday. I must say it looks awfully good outside for the end of the world. The weather here was nasty for more then a week, rains, wind, cold. Yesterday it was nice and sunny, so is today. Must be the end of the world that caused such great weather. I mean, God did say he we will all live in paradise after the judgement day. Granted bible also predicts horrible destruction before the paradise, but who knows maybe good old Yahwah just softened up a little. Btw, I read a good chunk of the bible and haven't seen anything about the exact date, on the contrary, I seem to remember it being rather vague about the timing, saying no one will really know, so we always have to be on our best behavior.
Perhaps this is why this pamphlet didn't give the exact quote. How many times has the end of the world been prophesied? How many times has it come true? If I remember correctly, 2000 was supposed to be the end of the world, how well did that go?

I know, it's all because of those Pastafarians, they screwed up this perfectly good apocalypses by dressing up like pirates... Perhaps Jahwah wanted it to be scorching hot to fry us all this way and all those darn pirates cooled down the earth.

Dear Pastafarians, if you are out there reading this, thank you. You saved us all from doom.

Joy, Abstract Painting.

Just finished this abstract painting today. This is a small one, 5x7 inches done in watercolor and ink. I wanted to do a few small paintings for giveaways and post cards, so I did this one. Thought it would be a quick painting I can do in a couple of hours, turned out I forgot how long those lines take. Well, no matter. I got one done so far and will make it into a post card. I would normally sell the original of this size for $30, but I'll be giving it away for free. Haven't figured out the time and what people need to do to enter into this giveaway yet, but I'll be posting it soon, so stay tuned.

I'm thinking about starting a youtube channel where I'll be talking about my art as well as about other artists, so I was thinking about giving away this painting to celebrate. What do you think? Anyone who subscribes to my future channel can enter and once the first video gets 100 views this painting goes to the winner? Should I throw in a few more gifts for say 2nd and 3rd places?

Monkey and Cuteness

I haven't posted a new post in a week now, so I figured since I don't have any new finished pieces done, I'll share photographs and stories about my two best friends, Monkey and Cuteness. First about the names. I have a habit of giving names that describe a cat in some way, it actually isn't even done on purpose as names often end up changing as the new personality traits emerge.

Monkey, when we first found him, was often referred to as little one or little lion, because he was so tiny, not to mention starved and he kind of looked like a tiny lion. Once he got healthier, we got to see his wild side. He is a very funny guy who does crazy things, like hiding his head ostrich style. He makes funny faces, especially when he is in his crazy mode. I slowly started saying that he monkeys around, called him monkey boy, little monkey and slowly he became the Monkey cat. By the way on the photo above he is yet again trying to stick his head into the floor. His behind is sticking up, but that's ok, because if he can't see you, there is no way you can see him... He tried this trick on Cuteness, it didn't work.

Oh yes, and Monkey loves sitting in boxes. For some time he kept on getting into this box I used to dry my paper mache in, so I took a picture of it and he looks like a hobo who had way too much to drink. Box being all dirty from the wet paper made it that much more believable.

Cuteness used to go by a different name as well. His original name was Rocky, because he used to box when he was little. He would get up on his hind legs and swipe 3 times with his left paw and one strong swipe with his right. This name never stuck though, probably because Cuteness didn't like it that much. He is a very sweet cat, who, if he was human, would probably be a poet. He kisses me all the time, and I don't mean licking, he actually kisses. What he does is he parts his lips a little bit and touches my chick or forehead with his lips. That often is very scary as well as sweet because his teeth go past his lower jaw and I can feel them every time he kisses me. We first started calling his Cuteness about two years ago. He would always answer anything along the lines of cute, cute face, cuteness, cutosaur and everything else cute. He usually responds to Sweetness as well. I remember one time he was all bundled up and half asleep, I said "cute face" and he immediately popped his head up and said mew that sounded like a happy and adorable "yes, that's me"

Cuteness is a survivor though, he is a fighter when he needs to be. He was attacked by a coyote once and that fiend didn't realize how dangerous a cat can be. Granted Cuteness is not your average cat, he is 40lb by now and he climes trees so fast he might as well be running on a flat surface. After this coyote attack cuteness came home with some bruising that seemed to be from the teeth. Patches of coyote fur were stuck between Cutie's claws.

There was another battle as well, with an owl. The owl was gigantic, 6 foot wing span and all. Cuteness decided to climb up yet another tree and when he got to the top he realized he wasn't the only one up there. The owl liked the idea of sitting on a tree as well. Owl figured it might as well have a snack, but it couldn't get Cutie on a tree, not owl's hunting style. Owls usually grab it's pray when they swoop down, tree branches wouldn't allow it. Cuteness on the other hand needed the own to be on the ground so that he could pounce it, the owl wasn't stupid enough to get down. Cuteness ended up circling very close to the tree trunks so that the own wouldn't be able to swoop down at him and after a some time the owl figured Cute is too smart for him and flew away.

Now the craziest battle Cute almost gotten into while trying to protect me was with a bear. I live very close to the woods and small bears often wonder around after dark. One of them came to sniff around the windows. All I heard was a soul ranching growl of my sweet cat friend and Cutie's claws trying to get through the window screen. I honestly never heard a cat growl like that, I got goose bumps from hearing it. Who needs a guard dog when you have a cat like that?

My husband wasn't around to hear the super growl, but he got to hear it more then half a year later, when we got Monkey. Monkey was terrified of Cute in the beginning and kept of hissing and growling at him. All cuteness wanted is to be friends, but his size was too intimidating for a tiny kitten. Monkey would try to swipe at Cute to keep him away and it would only result in Cute hitting back, which wasn't helping. One of these days when Monkey yet again growled at Cuteness, Cute decided to teach him a lesson and gave the killer growl. Monkey shrank back, trembling. My husband was shocked at how intimidating such a sweet cat can sound. If you would hear the growl and not see who it is growling, you's think it's a mountain lion or some other kind of large wind cat.

Cuteness and Monkey are friends now, playing together all the time and keeping each other safe. Well, Cuteness is keeping Monkey safe I should say, Monkey is too crazy and reckless to let him protect anyone.

I feel very lucky I have such good friends, and that's exactly what they are, friends. Not pets, because they have more freedom in this house then I do, not kids, because they discipline me (with claws in the hand if I don't hug them long enough), but friends. Well, monkey used to be a kid when we just got him, but that's because he needed a protective maternal figure, and figured I'm the best he can get. Well, as Cute is sleeping by my feet and Monkey in the box with photographs, I guess I should follow their example. It is 2:30 am after all.

Artistic and Sociological Experiment

I was playing in GIMP the other day, didn't really have any idea in mind, just playing with tools to figure out a new way to use them. Well I did find a new way. Super fast abstract digital painting. It tool me less then 5 minutes to do this one. I ended up spending a couple of hours playing with this idea and ended up with 5 paintings that I saved and a ton more that I didn't even bother saving. So, here is a question that popped into my head as I was doodling in GIMP: Can I sell this? Would people actually want to buy this? Will it sell better than pieces that take me a whole day to draw and paint?

The way our society works and the direction art is going, I'm scared to admit, but I think answers would be: yes, yes and yes.

So here is what I decided. I will open a new red bubble account,  come up with a pseudonym and see if it will sell. If It does, well art might be in trouble, but at least I'll make enough money to buy myself that potter's wheel and kiln.

What do you think, would anyone buy these?
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
A quick update. I just finished a few more of these and expanded the idea a little further, mixing more colors, making faces out of them and so on. I already opened a new account on red bubble for it and will start posting tomorrow. Everything will be posted under a pseudonym Ghostly Digital. I will not advertise it, but I will come up with a strange story for each of these digital paintings. If it will sell, it will not be because of the effort on my part at advertising. I understand it's unfair to compare sales of the work I do advertise and try very hard to get out there, but I simply don't have enough time to spend on advertising yet another account. I will only post a link on my blogs.

Handmade Lether Shoes.

First leather shoes I've ever made, Woo Hoo...
Now here is the whole story: My husband has very wide feet, and finding shoes for him is very, very, very hard. Especially considering the fact that he walks a lot, so they need to be comfortable. After trying to find him new shoes for a couple of weeks, I gave up and decided to try my hand at shoe making.

In order to make these shoes I got a pair of sandals and mutilated them. I basically  just needed a shoe sole, so the pair I got was chosen with this in mind. Everything was glued to the sole, which made it easier to remove without causing any damage. There are no holes or anything like that. There are two indents though on each side of the shoe where the sandal was glued together. You can see this indent on the picture, I couldn't mask it in any way. Sandals I chose for this mission had very soft soles, which made things easier. Usually you would need extra layer of leather on the sole for comfort, but because it was already soft enough I didn't need it.

The second material I used was the leather. I didn't have any tough, durable leather that is usually used for the shoes, so I used an old leather jacket. The use of softer leather has it's pros and cons. First of all, it's not as durable, I honestly don't expect these shoes to last more then a couple of month, if even that long. It also doesn't hold shape, so shoes don't look as good. On the other hand it's more comfortable because you don't have to wait till you break into them, they shape to the foot as soon as you put them on. My husband said he likes the fact the leather is so soft for that exact reason. Even moccasins as comfortable as they are took him a few days to adjust to.

I used moccasin shoe design for this pair. I hate following instructions, so I changed it a little bit to make it easier for me to figure it out. I had to cut out 2 shapes for each shoe. One was the bottom and sides and the other was the top. I glues the first shape to the sole with a mild glue, just so that it wouldn't move while I'm sewing it together. Once the glue dried, I sewed the sole to the leather. Next step was to sew the top of the future shoe to the sides and sew the back of the shoe together.
I used waxed hemp string for all the sewing and to make a tie.

When I was sewing the sole, hemp cord was going through the bottom of the shoe and would be touching the ground, so I used some soldering magic and berried the cord in a layer of melted rubber. It solidified very fast and now all of the cord is protected and is less likely to wear through.

It took me 2 days to get these done. Figuring out how to size it was one of the hardest parts. Sewing through leather was a nightmare. Needle had no problem going through the rubber though.

Now totally of topic, have I mentioned I got myself on a new schedule? Today is the day I'm supposed to draw and paint. So hopefully I'll be able to come up with something new and exciting. I was actually so busy with everything else that I haven't drawn much in the last month.

S is for Sun, Ornate Alphabet

Here goes another letter, this time it's S. I know, I'm not doing this in order, but we artists are funky and moody and do strange things, so I have to act like this. Otherwise who would believe I'm an artist?

I have been trying to organize myself and found out it's not good for my sleep cycle. I have certain amount of work I have to get done every day, but I'm a procrastinator. I wait till it's 9pm and only then do I actually start doing it. As a result I end up going to sleep at 4-5am. Well, at least I started blogging more regularly. Now I have to figure out how to invent a new calendar and get everyone to use it. I mean honestly, I need 2 more days in a week. Without it I don't have enough time for arts and crafts.

Pure Joy from Underwater Collection

Finally I got around to posting the third piece (Inner Peace  and Fire of Passion are the first two) from the underwater collection. Pure Joy is done in color ink and watercolor. I first colored the background with watercolor and than inked over it. The joy this woman is feeling is not tainted by and negative undertone, it’s not a joy over someone’s mishap, or victory over a foe, this joy is all about the great things that happen all around. I demonstrated this pure and warm feeling by having red hair and lips. I often see people who smile out of politeness, you can easily spot such smiles by looking into person’s eye. The lips are smiling, but the eyes reflect the true feeling. In this drawing I made irises red as well to show that this joy comes from the heart rather than pretense.

I am almost done with the next piece from this collection, it will be sadness. Just have to finish doing the shadow on it. Don't know what I'll do for the fifth and last of this collection, anger perhaps.
